The Museum

The Skagafjörður Heritage Museum (Byggðasafn Skagfirðinga) was founded on May 29, 1948. The museum’s first founding charter dates from 1948, but a revised version was adopted in 1999 after the municipalities in Skagafjörður had been consolidated into two. Previously, the museum belonged to the county and later to the regional council, which managed the affairs of rural districts and towns within the county boundaries. Today, the Skagafjörður Heritage Museum is owned by the Municipality of Skagafjörður, which is responsible for its operation.

The museum’s activities follow its founding charter and museum policy, as defined in those respective documents. These outline the museum's goals and its approach to collecting, preservation, research, dissemination, and museum education.

The museum offices are located in the parsonage north of Glaumbær Church, and its exhibitions are on the museum grounds at Glaumbær. The museum's storage facilities are in Sauðárkrókur.
